RE: Haul Road in winter

I watched that show too, they were showing temp readings of -55ºF which is just a tad chilly for me to go camping in!! I'd have to leave the rig running, and that big ol' Caterpillar is located right underneath my bed!!

RE: Best NC coast campgrounds

Small, family owned & operated, full hook-up's for HALF what the big campgrounds charge, you can't go wrong with Ocean Waves Campground located in Cape Hatteras area (Waves NC). Most of the campgrounds on Hatteras Island are lacking in tree's and mostly sand underfoot, this campground has several sites with some tree's and grassy sites.

RE: Douthat State Park in Virginia

White Oak (the one across from the Ranger station noted above) has the biggest sites. Can't say there is a lot to do right there in the campground, and you'll be a little ways from Shenandoah and the BRP but not so far as you can't make day trips...

RE: It makes my Day

Better answer might have been, "A whole lot less than your monthly payment on THAT THING!!" (while pointing to his leaking rig)...

RE: Ocean Waves Campground at Outter Banks NC

OWC does have a small store, but the Food Lion in Avon as mentioned above is only 15-20 minute drive down the road, it's big and well stocked...

RE: Blue ox-best prices?

Just keep watching ebay... it took me a year to find all the pieces I wanted at prices that were unbeatable. I don't have the latest & greatest, but I did wind up will a brand new Base Plate for $100, brand new tow bar (older style Ranger II) for $75, and an Apollo brake unit for $125... the deals come up from time to time... Can't beat that, $300 for the hardware, only thing left was the safetey cables and the electrical cable (and the electical cable I got at Northern Tool, cost me $29.99 compared to the Blue Ox cable at the RV dealer for $66) bascially the same cable!!

RE: Pay For Hours Worked?

It may not be less places offering pay, but more and more Workampers are grabbing up the paying jobs, which probably leaves a lot of campgrounds that are NOT offering money high & dry... Just a guess here, but that may explain why you are seeing more and more positions that do not offer any pay. When the time comes that I'm ready to start workamping, I will only consider those that pay for all hours worked...plus a site.

RE: Non-retired full timers

I'm 54 and have been full timing for 4 years now, the entire time having worked full time 40 hours (plus) per week at the same company. I have moved 3 times, stayed in freinds yard for 1.5 years, stayed at a campground for 2.5 years, and have been at a Mobile Home park for the last 3 months. I can't consider retirement for at least 8 more years, but this has been a great experience and I have no exit plan or strategy... my only plan is to hit the road once I do retire!

RE: Week, Month, Seasonal

I stayed at a campground without a sewer hook-up for 2.5 years!! They had Honey Wagon service that would come pump out 2 tanks for $3 (or 3 tanks for $5)... It was great, for 2.5 years they did the sewer for me, I didn't even have to be there! On a good week I could stretch it out for 7 days, though twice per week was the norm... They cut our grass, but they wouldn't get in close to the camper, you had to borrow a trimmer from them to do the close-in stuff yourself...

RE: Maybe going to the OBX, NC

I've got a couple pictures of the place, top 2 pictures are at Buxton, the rest of them are Frisco Woods. CLICK HERE I also recommend Ocean Waves Campground above all the others, and with gas prices like they are, it's likely they have some cancelations and you might be able to get a site there.

RE: Wear and tear on your TT

Some makes are better suited to full timing than others. My TC was mentioned in the owners manual that it should NOT be used for FT, but I used it for 3 years and it have had no issues with appliances and devices. The only problem encountered after 3 years was soft spots in the floor, and that had to do with the aluminum-foam core-aluminum sandwich composite floor it has. My Thomas Bus conversion on the other hand, has been built to my standards, and everything I did was intended for full time use. It still needs more insulation under the floors, but I've got all summer to get that job done!!

RE: Cornfused bout them sattilight thingies

One other thing to consider when making your choice between the two satellite services. The sat's for directv are a little higher in the sky than the sat's for Dish, and as such can be a little easier getting a clear signal in forested area's. They both will work, but a high tree line can block the Dish while still allowing access to DTV... Another thing you may want to consider is local channels. The "Locals" only work in an area of around 250 Sq Miles of the city you subscribe to. If you are doing a lot of moving around over large areas you may want to get national service with a choice of either east coast or west coast feeds, unless something has changed recently that I'm not aware of, Dish no longer offers this service but Direct still does. These are just some things to ponder as you make your decision.

RE: Carrying > $10,000.00 Into USA

The above is correct, they are looking for currency/cash. And $10,000 seems to be a magic number in this country. You can't make a $10,000 cash transaction at the bank without it being reported. You should be fine with bank drafts or travelers checks...

RE: State Park or Nice Campground In Central or Western Virginia

I will 2nd the motion on Goose Point Park, it's the best of western Va... Not far from Martinsville, and located right next to Fairystone State Park. http://www.gonecamping.net/reviews/va/goose_pt-va.html http://www.saw.usace.army.mil/philpott/goosepoint.htm http://www.gonecamping.net/images/goose-pt/site-18a.jpg http://www.gonecamping.net/images/goose-pt/site-17a.jpg

RE: Connecticut to South Carolina

I would suggest Pocahontas State Park for a stop over, it's about midway through Va, just a couple exits south of Richmond. It's far enough off the interstate to give you a peaceful stop, has back-in AND pull through sites, water & electric and a dump station on the way out. They added a brand new camping loop last year too! Pocahontas SP website I got some pictures posted (does NOT include the new loop)... Pocahontas CG Review Also, from the directions on the official website, I would recommend the Rt-288 entry, it's quickest & four lane!

RE: Taking an RV I do not own from US to Canada to sell. ??

Your best bet is to advertise it in Canada, and let the buyer import it themselves. If you already have a buyer, then it would be far better for them to come get it.

RE: Eastern VA campground suggestions

Oh, I was ready to load you a list of Va Beach and Williamsburg campgrounds... Out west end of the state huh? I've been to a few, but like Sherando Lake USFS campground the best, not much for hook-up's though - electric only! And the very best campground out that way would have to be Goose Point Park which is an Army COE campground with some GREAT waterfont sites in Loop-C (all water & electric in that loop), check out their interactive map HERE and look at sites 17 & 18, can't go wrong there! Not too far north & west of Martinsville... park entrance is right beside Fairystone State Park...

RE: Where to go for the very best Ribs?????

Couldn't tell ya who's got the best, and I can see EVERYONE thinks the one around the corner from them is the best, I'm sure they are all great places for ribs. Around these parts the place to go is Frankie's Place for Ribs in Virginia Beach... (Don't forget to order the Onion Loaf!!)

RE: Holiday Travel Park in Va. Beach

We went there last fall and loved it. It's a HUGE campground but one of the quietest we have ever been to. You must have visited during a particularly quiet weekend, the Navy jets fly all around this campground! As for getting there, there is indeed construction going on at Birdneck Rd, but it isn't that bad, they will be opening up a new section real soon too. Sometimes they stop traffic because only one lane is open. I utilize Birdneck Rd almost daily, it's not that bad, plenty of RV's still using it.
